NEGOTIATING YOUR WAY INTO WEALTH AND RICHES
“And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country. Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee. And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake. And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it. And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me. For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also? And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock: I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire. So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me. And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word. And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons. And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks. Gen 30:25-36
The above verses of the Bible show how Jacob negotiated his way into wealth and riches. For close to twenty years, Jacob labored in the home of Laban with practically nothing to show for all of his labor except for his two wives and children until he understood the art of negotiating. He used the power of effective negotiation to access his financial destiny. The negotiation took place in chapter 30 of the book of Genesis, and in the next chapter, chapter 31 of the same book, he was an established financial giant. Effective negotiating skill opened the next chapter of his life.
“Jacob learned that Laban’s sons were talking behind his back: “Jacob has used our father’s wealth to make himself rich…..” Gen31: 1(MSG)
Money is basically made through the sales of products and services, but to profitably sell your product or service in the market place, would require you master the art of negotiating. Negotiating is a learnable skill.
The art of negotiating revolves making the other person feel he is getting as much as you are. It’s about achieving your goals through discussion and bargaining with another person.
The better you’re at negotiating, the better you will become at getting what you want by helping the other person to get what he or she wants. It is about compromise. Great negotiators think win-win in all interactions with otheers.
One of the basic principles of effective and productive negotiating is to know that the other person is not an enemy. The best negotiations are those in which both parties are happy and contented. It is all always about win-win thing. If two people shift their focus from defeating each other to defeating the problem, everyone benefits.
It’s important for you to conduct your negotiations as if you will be dealing with the person again. People don’t have to be poor for you to be rich. Nobody needs to fail for you to succeed. We can all succeed and be rich. When you sell to someone, it is business sense to expect them to make profit.
It is when people are blessed and profitable doing business with you that they will want to come again and again. The rule of the game is repeat business.
Set Your Goals: What do you want to achieve in the negotiation? You must be clear about your desired end result. There is really no point negotiating if you don’t know what you’re negotiating for.
Steps Necessary for productive negotiations
Set The Limits: What is the least you’re willing to accept? What is the maximum you’re seeking? This knowledge will help you set boundaries. It will help you to know when to shift ground and when to be firm in your decision. Always know your bottom line.
Be Knowledgeable: Be well informed on the subject under negotiation. Prepare and do your research ahead. This will make it hard for the other party to take advantage of your ignorance or lack of adequate information.
Also find out about the need of the other party. This will enhance your bargaining power.
Things that are not important to you could be very important to the other person, based on the fact that each person places different values on different things at different times. You could give up these things to get what you want. Always be prepared to give up things to get what you want, therefore stay flexible.
The principle of subjective value states that a transaction is possible only when both parties value what they are getting more than what they are giving in trade.
